I grew up with parents who loved listening to music. Mom had an expensive Kenwood system with rack-mounted components and speakers the size of a small child. She also had an extensive CD collection that grew and grew. She would play music loudly, and all of us made it the background music of our days. I remember rocking out in front of the stereo, making the rug my dance floor. Mom would clean, and my sister would play with dolls. Mom played popular music: folk, rock, country and Christian.

Dad, a little older, was the cassette guy. Cassettes are sturdy, compact, and don't mind a little dust. He would play them on a boombox in his shop or on the tape deck in his truck. I had fun with cassettes, recording voice memos and making mixed tapes. There was that trick where you could stick some scotch tape over the top tabs of any tape to record over it. I was 12 when my own music collection began. My first real stereo had a 5-CD changer, with an AM/FM radio and a tape deck. I also got two albums: The Eagles's Hotel California, representing my parents' taste and DC Talk's Jesus Freak, representing my own. The stereo lived in my room, so that's where I listened as I tinkered with legos or puttered around. It was always easier to let the music play uninterrupted, but there were times I would skip songs. I loved Jonathan Larson's hit musical Rent, but the song "Contact," –a sexy song–was a bridge too far for my Christian sensibilities, so I would always jolt up and hit "next" when it came on.

My first car had an interesting quirk: you could pull the keys out of the ignition while the car was running. I loved surprising my passengers by tossing them the keys to hold as we drove down the road. Another quirk was its 8-Track player, whose secret door I discovered one day while polishing the AM/FM tuner. I bought a random old 8-track from Goodwill, but it was only an ironic purchase, again to show off to the odd teenaged passenger. Since my car was made in the 70s, my main music setup was an FM transmitter and Discman combo. I would sing in the car, loudly.
私が初めて所有した車にはちょっと驚かせるところがあって、運転中でもイグニッションからキーを抜けるというのがその一つだ。 車を走らせながらキーを抜いて、助手席に座っている人にぽんと投げて「持っていてね」と言ってびっくりさせるのが好きだった。 この車のもう一つの特徴は、ラジオのディスプレイを拭いている時に発見したのだが、単なるラジオではなく８トラックプレイヤーでもあることが気付いた。 グッドウィルという中古品店で買った古びた８トラックのカセットをかけていただが、かなり古いバンドだったので、これもまた同世代の乗客をびっくりさせるギャグとして使うためだけだった。 70年代の車だったので、私は主に音楽の再生はFMトランスミッターとCDウォークマンの組み合わせでしていた。 よく運転しながら一人で大声で歌ったものだ。CDは順番に聴くこともあったが、一番歌いたい曲を優先して聴いていた。
As I got older, I mostly continued listening to music in album order. It felt natural, like reading a book starting on page one, with high points and low as the story progressed.
歳を取ってからも、CDは大体アルバムの曲順で聴いていた。 読書するのも1ページ目から読み始めるように、アルバムを順番通りに聴けばテンションが上がったり下がったりしてストーリーを体感できる。
After college, where I was exposed to classical, Christian ska and more Broadway, I returned home feeling behind the times because I didn't know any of the songs on the radio. Walking around shops, I would browse the CD section and take a chance on an interesting-looking album, all in an effort to catch up. That's how I discovered In Between Dreams by Jack Johnson. The CD case stood out because it was made of paper instead of plastic and had a silhouette of a huge tree on the front cover. I took it home and sat down with cup of coffee and the lyric book and did a complete listen-through. I listened attentively, the way I was trained in music school, without screens, people, or something to keep my hands busy. My love for the CD grew with every pass and soon I was learning Jack Johnson songs on the guitar.
音大でクラシックやクリスチャン系のスカ、さらに様々なミュージカルと出会ったが、卒業後、家に帰ってきた時には現代音楽の知識が乏しく、ラジオで流行っている曲も何一つ知らなくて、時代に取り残された気がした。 地元で買い物しているときに面白そうに思わせるCDを物色するようになった。 お店で見つけた個性的なCDを買って聴いてみることで、現代音楽に対する無知を埋めようとしたのだ。 そうしているうちに、ジャック・ジョンソンのアルバム『In Between Dreams』と出会った。 CDケースが紙製で、プラスチックのケースより目立ち、カバーに熱い眼差しの女性の顔ではなく、巨大な木のシルエットが描かれてあったから、興味を覚えて買ってみた。 帰ったらさっそくコーヒーを淹れて、歌詞をフォローしながらアルバムを一気に最後まで聴いた。 音大で覚えた集中鑑賞法で、デバイスの画面を見ず、話し相手も持たず、手で何か弄んだりせず、ただ音楽を聴くことに集中した。
I stopped listening to entire albums as I began studying Japanese in the mp3 era. I purchased singles I heard walking around Japan, or in anime songs and cobbled them together into curated playlists. I enjoyed Yano Akiko's album Japanese Girl, but the too-slowly dissolving language barrier meant I didn't have patience for most Japanese albums. Albums made a comeback as my Japanese proficiency rose, and I discovered awesome albums like We are Tokyo Karankoron.

After I began dating my partner, an up-to-date listener of English music, newer English music began to enter my rotation, again mostly as singles. In my mid 30s, I started listening to more spoken word, like podcasts and audiobooks during long walks through Maebashi city in Japan.

Back in America again I followed the lead of my partner(they/them) and turned into a vinyl hipster. They started with a Victrola suitcase record player but quickly upgraded turntables to an Audio-Technica AT-LP120, leaving the inferior Victrola staring at me in a lonely sort-of way. Records seemed so expensive to me because I had gotten used to buying singles in the iTunes store, so I tried classical vinyl, which is usually heavily discounted. My classical collection expands with every record store visit because of the bottomlessness of the genre. Classical vinyl retrained me to listen to music from beginning to end without skipping around. Spinning records remove the temptation to skip songs–I don't want to risk damaging my needle or scratching the record–I just let them play and enjoy the journey. My little Victrola and classical music has become my replacement for lo-fi girl as I spend hours at the computer studying, writing or programming. The needle stopping server as a natural timer, reminding me to stand up, stretch, or get something to drink.
ところがその後、アメリカに帰ったら、パートナーを真似してLPレコードにハマってしまった。 パートナーが「Victrola」という安いレコードプレーヤーでLPレコード集めを始めたかと思うと、すぐに「Audio-Technica AT-LP120」にアップグレードして、残されたほぼ新品だったヴィクトローラがかわいそうに思えた。 しかし、iTunesでシングルを購入するのに慣れてきていたので、LPレコードは高価に感じて、大幅な割引で買えるクラシックLPから集め始めた。 クラシックは500年間もある奥深い歴史があって集めても集めても終わりのないジャンルなので、今までレコード店に行くたびにコレクションが増えてかなり集めてきてしまった。 LPのおかげでスキップもせず、また最初から最後まで聴くようになり、昔やっていた音楽の鑑賞法を思い出した。 というのも、レコードが回っている間に針をむやみに外すと、針を傷めたりレコードにひっかき傷をつけてしまうかもしれないので、レコードをかけたら、かけっぱなしにしておきたいからだ。 以前はパソコンで作業をしているときにLo-fiを聴いていたが、今はクラシックを聴きながら語学学習や執筆、プログラミングに集中している。 針が止まるのが自然にタイマーの代わりとなり、椅子から立ち上がって、ストレッチしたり飲み物を淹れる時間を告げるものになっている。
I have been enjoying listening to music the old way again.
